![]() The environment of support that many families lack was made stronger through one member excelling in sports. Any mother who has sat through a little league season knows exactly what this means. A lesson this can teach is not to engage with these parents as they can become violent or verbally abusive. This made my brother and I appreciate our parents with their relaxed supportive nature. Watching other parents at the high school level and the way they would berate their teens after a bad game was appalling. My brother was extremely self-motivated so he pushed himself in his athletics and we were all there to support him. Now there are other options besides eating a few pounds of chicken per day-like that of nutritional supplements like amino acids and protein shakes. A lesson that can be taken from this is that for an athlete to perform at their highest level they have to be using the best fuel possible. Buying directly from farms turned into our strategy for this as we could buy in bulk and my brother took comfort in knowing where the food came from. My brother only ate natural foods that were not pumped full of hormones, but it got expensive. The nutrition that an elite athlete needs on a daily basis cannot be from processed foods or junk foods. ![]() My mother took care of all of the bumps and bruises he frequently had due to the rough sports he excelled in.Įating Like An Elite Athlete is Expensive! All my incredibly self-disciplined brother had to do was tell him and he would get up sometimes at 4 a.m. My father was willing to get up at any hour for any practice regardless of where it was. This continued well into his college sports career where he would call me a few hours before a game to get his mind off of things. My job as the sister was to help him relax before a game by starting a random conversation. The following are lessons that I learned from watching my parents raise my prodigy athlete brother.Įveryone Plays a Role in Success and FailureĮveryone had a role in our family when it came to my brother’s playing career. ![]() The support system that it takes to raise a family already takes a lot, but it multiplies with a great athlete. The lessons can be used for nearly any parent regardless if their child is the next Mozart or Michael Jordan. ![]() Being the sister of the star athlete has its own perks as well, but more than anything the way my parents raised us taught me quite a lot. Being raised with a brother who was considered one of the best athletes coming out of our city ever could not have been more exciting. ![]()
